Job Description

Overview

The City of San Luis is seeking a City Attorney to provide executive leadership and serve as the Chief Legal Advisor for the City. This role involves delivering legal counsel to various city departments and managing all legal affairs for the city, including contract negotiations, compliance, and representing the city in legal proceedings.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel to City Council, City Manager, and various boards and commissions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, intergovernmental agreements, and legal documents.
  • Attend city council meetings and render legal advice on agenda matters.
  • Conduct complex legal research and prepare legal opinions for City departments.
  • Oversee adherence to City policies and evaluate legal risks.
  • Manage investigations of claims and complaints against the City.
  • Prepare and manage the department budget and staffing needs.
  • Oversee the Prosecutor's Office and litigation involving the City.
  • Develop and implement goals, objectives, and policies for the City Attorney's Office.

Required skills

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • Five years of legal experience, with three years in a supervisory role
  • Licensed to practice law in Arizona
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and municipal law
  • Legal research and writing skills
  • Public speaking and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects independently
  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred
