Overview

The City of San Luis is seeking a City Attorney to provide executive leadership and oversight for the City Attorney's Office and City Prosecutor's Office. This role involves delivering legal counsel to various city officials and departments, drafting legal documents, and representing the City in legal proceedings.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel to the City Council and City Manager
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and legal documents
  • Attend city council meetings and provide legal advice on agenda items
  • Conduct complex legal research and prepare legal opinions
  • Oversee municipal compliance and risk management
  • Manage outside counsel and litigated claims
  • Prepare and manage the department budget
  • Participate in leadership meetings to offer legal guidance
  • Stay current on relevant laws and legal developments

Required skills

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Five years of progressively responsible legal experience
  • Supervisory experience over legal staff
  • Knowledge of municipal law and practices
  • Ability to conduct legal research and analysis
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Valid Arizona driver's license
  • Licensed to practice law in Arizona
  • Bilingual in Spanish (preferred)
  • Experience in local government (preferred)
