Job Description

Overview

The City of San Luis is seeking a City Attorney to provide executive leadership and oversight for the City Attorney's Office and City Prosecutor's Office. The City Attorney will serve as the Chief Legal Advisor, delivering legal counsel to various city officials and representing the City in legal proceedings.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel to the City Council, City Manager, and other city departments.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and legal documents.
  • Attend city council meetings and provide legal advice on agenda matters.
  • Conduct complex legal research and prepare legal opinions.
  • Oversee compliance with city policies and legislation.
  • Manage the City Prosecutor's Office and provide oversight in litigation.
  • Evaluate and advise on risk related to city operations.
  • Prepare and manage the department budget.

Required skills

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • At least five years of legal experience, with three in a supervisory role.
  • Knowledge of municipal law principles and practices.
  • Contract negotiation and development expertise.
  • Legal research and analysis skills.
  • Ability to represent the City in various legal proceedings.
  • Budget management experience.
