Overview

The Certified First Assistant in Surgery (CFA) at OhioHealth plays a crucial role in supporting surgeons during operative procedures by providing essential assistance in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions to ensure patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes. The position requires proficiency in multiple surgical service lines and focuses on maintaining high standards of safety and quality in healthcare operations.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist surgeons by providing exposure, hemostasis, and technical skills during procedures.
  • Utilize retractors to enhance visibility of the operative site.
  • Maintain a dry field of operation using suction and sponges.
  • Provide hemostasis through clamps, cautery, and ligation.
  • Complete closure of fascia, subcutaneous tissue, and skin under surgeon direction.
  • Be competent in 4-6 service lines, including advanced orthopedics or neurosurgery.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and communicate effectively with staff.
  • Identify and intervene in potential emergency situations safely.

Required skills

  • Associate Degree in Surgical Technology or related field
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification
  • CST - Certified Surgical Tech certification
  • 2 years of experience as a Surgical Tech in an inpatient or outpatient main OR
  • Basic critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate responsibility
