Overview

The Border Patrol Agent (BPA) role offers experienced individuals an opportunity to protect the community while working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Candidates with previous law enforcement experience may qualify for higher-graded positions and are encouraged to apply for this critical federal law enforcement role.

Key responsibilities

  • Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws
  • Preventing and apprehending aliens and smugglers at or near the borders
  • Maintaining surveillance from covert positions
  • Performing physical checks and inspections of vehicles and individuals
  • Patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways using various modes of transportation

Required skills

  • Prior law enforcement experience
  • Military experience (preferred)
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Proficient use of firearms
  • Ability to prepare investigative reports
  • Experience in making arrests and enforcing laws
